a first

a few pics from that last big trip: the wild West Coast

So here’s kind of the last batch of pictures from our NZ trip from a few stops along the West Coast of the South Island. A really pristine coast, with a wild symphony of whitewater, huge, thundering waves, amazing rock formations, seal colonies, native birds and completely oversized vegetation, topped with the full range of…

On the last day of 2013 we went on a boat trip in Mercury Bay where we got to see a whole lot of different, spectacular rock formations, caves and tiny islands. The water was turquoise and really cold, but of course we had to take a dip into this part of the ocean even…

a few pics from that last big trip: Sailing the Bay of Islands

On Christmas Day, we went on a sailing trip in the Bay of Islands. The beautiful yacht took us from Pahia across to Russell and then on to a few uninhabited islands, where we went exploring and hiked up a steep hill with beautiful views of the surrounding islands. Quite a way to spent Christmas!

Evening sun sparkling in Walvis Bay with three flamingos looking for food in the shallow waters. There were thousands of flamingos at the bay, feeding and standing in the water with their stick-thin legs. We went there during our trip to Namibia and drove through the big sand dunes between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay to…

Sunset Saturday XXIV

Evening atmosphere in Durban. While I was there last week, I caught the sunset from the pier at Ushaka. The view of the skyline and the ocean was beautiful, and at some point, the sun came right through a little space between the buildings, making the ocean and the air sparkle from the sun rays.

a warm place to be

I was lucky and got to see the beach again when I flew to Durban for a couple of days to attend some meetings. The temperature forecast shocked me with lows of -5°, but while I was there it was actually quite nice and warm. From my hotel room on the 19th floor I could…

little italy

We spent some time on the East coast of Zanzibar, in a wind-swept place called Uroa. All the locals (and the “Massai”) spoke Italian, as most of the tourists coming there are from Italy. Our hotel was a nice little place, owned by an Italian (of course), who had trained the chef to serve Italian-inspired food…

Sunset at the beach after a massive thunderstorm in Varadero. The rain was pouring down for an hour or so, accompanied by ferocious thunders and gusts of wind. In the hotel there were several leaks where water was dripping from the ceiling onto the floor. The dark clouds went out towards the ocean and the…
